QuickBooks 2012 Features
Dear QuickBooks User,
I just finished researching the new features for QuickBooks 2012 and here is your annual summary of the changes that I find noteworthy, and whether you really need to upgrade or not.
QuickBooks for Windows
The Best New Feature by Far - Excel Integration Refresh for Pro, Premier & Enterprise
Finally, QuickBooks can save worksheet formatting when exporting to Excel. And it really works! I tried one of my usual mind-numbing board reports: P&L by Class and Budget Performance. I created a new report based on one of my old reports. I didn’t try every permutation, but here’s what I found:
1. Hiding of data columns/rows and renaming headers reproduced perfectly.
2. Resizing of columns containing data reproduced perfectly, however resized blank columns reverted to original size.
3. Changes in Row Height did not stick.
4. Margin adjustments/Center on Page/gridline choices reproduced perfectly.
Based on this new feature alone, I will be recommending that all of my clients with regular Excel reporting requirements upgrade to the new version.
Lead Center
QuickBooks now incorporates a Lead Center which allows you to enter data on people or businesses that may become customers in the future. The lead name can then easily be converted to a customer in QuickBooks. I am finding this more and more useful.
Better Handling of Memorized Transactions
I always joke with my clients that “automatic” entering of transactions in QuickBooks isn’t really automatic, is it? Well, it’s still not. Now even less so. When QuickBooks shows you which transactions are about to be ‘automatically’ entered, you can choose which to enter. Could be helpful for some of you.
QuickBooks for Mac
Download Transactions in Batches
Now you can download online banking transactions in batches instead of clicking on each transaction. This is a big timesaver.
Real Progress Invoicing
The biggest drawback for many businesses on QB for Mac has been the lack of progress invoicing. Finally you can create multiple, partial invoices from an estimate for jobs done in phases.
Should You Upgrade?
NOTE: The upgrade from 2011 to 2012 took forever to start on my computer so be patient. There are no glaring changes to interfere with your accustomed work flow.
If you are using QuickBooks 2009 AND you are using a QuickBooks payroll service you must upgrade before April 2012. Payroll in QuickBooks 2009 will not be supported by Intuit after this time.
If you are using QuickBooks 2010-2011, it is not necessary that you upgrade. However, you would really save time using 2012 if you often create Excel reports from QuickBooks.
If you are using QuickBooks 2009 for Windows or earlier (no payroll), don’t mess with it if it’s working on your old computer. You might want to consider upgrading if you need some of the newer functions available.
If you are using QuickBooks Pro 2009 for Mac or earlier, you should consider upgrading if you need more functionality. Credit card processing is nice; downloading bank transactions in batches is awesome.
